GST Hack @ CERN The real Story

As, most of the International Media, and mainly UK Telegraph which was the first to publish the event, and BBC which is the largest News Network which covered it, have really mistaken and inaccurate articles, anyone who is interested, may find here the translated from Greek, statement of GST's hack in CERN's CMS (Compact Muon Solenoid):

At this time an experiment attempt is being performed in CERN.

The reason we chose this page is to remind you of some things.

It [the deface] did not happen due to a conflict between us and CERN’s system administration team but because of the expected increase in number of visitors in the page in the next few days.

The ** have simply been placed so that we don’t expose people who has done nothing to anger us.

As we stated in the preamble, we do not want to destroy either the [operating] system or the website… Our purpose is to show, through action, our reaction to a lot of “active” members of the GHS [Greek Hacking Scene] which has become arrogant (litteral translation of the phrase “Καβαλήσει το καλάμι”, riding the stick) without offering anything…

Stupid cliques get created simply to insult and cause trouble (translated from “τραμπούκος”, insulting troublemaker, “τραμπουκίζω”, cause insult & trouble) through either words or IRC channel banning people who are not considered, by them or their flunkies, worthy of their knowlege and their image.

Some others, the 1337 (leet, elite) of the “scene”, only chat over cups of coffee and don’t do anything practical, as they are good at gossiping…but of “security”…what is that? we are 2600…don’t mess with us.

IRRELEVANT AND QUAINT!

Stop salivating and licking and start keyboarding! But, of course, criticising is easy especially when you have many 20year-olds around whispering “2600″-”2600″. Get yourselves in insomnia.gr and start gossiping (litteral translation of “θάβετε με μεγάλο φτυάρι”, burrying people through gossiping with a big shovel)…But it will also bear the seal of GST.

We are everywhere…because unlike you we don’t spend our nights writing songs or “rapping” away in public squares…nor do we laugh at what we cannot touch…

We don’t publicly expose you (translated from “ξεβρακώνουμε”, pulling your underpants down, Greek expression) because we don’t want to see you all running like mad and naked trying to find a hiding place and because we are not like you. You should, however, expect the response when you were laughing at things you had never considered doing…but we have spent enough time dealing with a bunch of schoolkids who learned about hacking through Hollywood movies and their dumb American culture of the neo-geek who reads hacking magazines while trying to crack his girlfriend’s e-mail account to see if she’s being unfaithful and has Linux on dual-boot to pose (translated from “ψαρώνει”, Greek expression) to his mates who also read neo-hacking mania-inspired magazines.

The entire Greek Internet is riddled with holes…some of the biggest government sites don’t even know the term “security”…since they assign the design of their sites to irrelevant companies.

SECURITY IS NOT CONDUCTED BY PAY-OFFS.

We are everywhere…

We salute the real hobbyists and the fanciers of the art of computers. Some old ones who stopped because they were bored and tired not with this art but with the stuck-up attitude (translated from “κόμπλεξ”) of all those “specialists” in the field!! And the young ones who don’t say many words but work with their heads down because what they care about is knowledge, and only knowledge!!

Dear CERN admins we patched the biggest BUG in your webpage so it doesn’t turn into a Dork and gets defaced every day with the silliness of every wannabe hacker.

Απαντήσεις για το Hacking στο CERN

Μέσα σε λίγες μέρες όλος ο κόσμος ασχολείται με το Ελληνικό Deface στο CMS (Compact Muon Solenoid) του CERN (Ευρωπαϊκό Κέντρο Πυρηνικών Ερευνών) λεπτομέρειες για το οποίο μπορείτε να βρείτε σε προηγούμενο post.

Φυσικά όπως είναι φυσικό η ανακρίβεια δίνει και παίρνει στα ξένα μέσα, με τη UK Telegraph και το BBC να συγχέουν τις ομάδες GST (Greek Security Team) και 2600. Σταγόνες στον ωκεανό αποτελούν κάποιες προσπάθειες μετάφρασης του κειμένου στην αγγλική γλώσσα από μεμονωμένους χρήστες του διαδικτύου όπως στην περίπτωση του κειμένου στο Grayhat Forensics.

Πού το παράξενο θα πει κανείς όταν και τα Ελληνικά ΜΜΕ δεν πάνε πίσω και σε ορισμένες περιπτώσεις έχουν αναδημοσιεύσει αυτές τις ανακρίβειες, παρόλο που θα ήταν πολύ απλό για τον εκάστοτε δημοσιογράφο, απλώς να διαβάσει την ανακοίνωση η οποία κυκλοφορεί σε screenshot στο διαδίκτυο.

Χαρακτηριστικότερη όλων μία έκφραση με την ακριβή μετάφραση του "We're pulling your pants down because we don't want to see you running around naked looking to hide yourselves when the panic comes" από κάποια εφημερίδα... Κάτι που είναι ανύπαρκτο στην ανακοίνωση, αλλά απλώς αποτελεί τη λανθασμένη μετάφραση των Times στη φράση: "Δεν σας ξεβρακώνουμε γιατί δε θέλουμε να τρέχετε όλοι πανικόβλητοι και γυμνοί ψάχνοντας το πώς θα κρυφτείτε και γιατί απλά δεν είμαστε σαν κι εσάς.".
Η οποία μάλιστα, αντιθέτως με τα λεγόμενα των εφημερίδων, δεν αναφέρεται καν στους υπεύθυνους του CERN αλλά στις ανταγωνιστικές ομάδες Hackers. Ομοίως και η έκφραση περί "Σχολιαρόπαιδων" που κυκλοφορεί σήμερα το πρωί στους πηχαίους τίτλους των περισσότερων εφημερίδων.

Επίσημη απάντηση για το περιστατικό δεν έχει δοθεί ακόμη, πέραν αυτής που δόθηκε στο δημοσιογράφο της UK Telegraph δια στόματος James Gilles, όμως η... αντίπερα όχθη της Ελληνικής Hacking Σκηνής, η ομάδα 2600 μέσω του δικτυακού της ιστοτόπου www.2600.gr έδωσε τις δικές της απαντήσεις επί του θέματος.

«Ο δράστης καταφένεται ενάντια στο θεσμό του 2600, καθώς και μερικών προσώπων.»

«Αυτό που μας δυσαρέστησε περισσότερο είναι η αδυναμία του ξένου κυρίως τύπου να καλύψει το γεγονός σωστά. Το www.telegraph.co.uk, διαβάζοντας μόνο και μόνο αυτό που μπορούσαν να καταλάβουν στη γλώσσα τους, γράφει:

"The people responsible signed off: "We are 2600 - dont mess with us. (sic)"

The website - cmsmon.cern.ch - can no longer be accessed by the public as a result of the attack."

Όπως μπορεί να καταλάβει κάθε έλληνας που θα διαβάσει το κείμενο, καμία από τις δύο προτάσεις δεν αληθεύει... »

«Η μεγάλη διαφορά του 2600 σχετικά με όλα τα άλλα ελληνικά fictional και μη "groups", είναι ότι το 2600 στην Ελλάδα, 9 χρόνια μετά την δημιουργία του συνεχίζει να υπάρχει σαν θεσμός, και να φέρνει κοντά κάθε μήνα τους έλληνες hackers που θέλουν να γνωριστούν και να ανταλλάξουν γνώσεις και απόψεις. Όλα τα άλλα "groups" ήρθαν, πέρασαν, και χάθηκαν... εις τα εξ ων συνετέθην!»

Όσο για τη GST, ακόμη δεν υπάρχουν πληροφορίες για το περί ποίων ατόμων πρόκειται, αν και δεν αποκλείεται το CERN να ζητήσει την εξέταση της υπόθεσης από την Ελληνική Υπηρεσία Δίωξης Ηλεκτρονικού Εγκλήματος...

Greek Hacking at CERN

Because of the experiment that is taking place in CERN's LHC, all the world was wired in European Organization 's for Nuclear Technology web network on Wednesday 10th September 2008. So a team of Greek Hackers, who call themselves GST (Greek Security Team) hacked into the CERN's CMS, proving that it was doable for someone to obtain access to the network.

The team uploaded a statement in the webpage http://smsmon.cern.ch/zrwan/apanthsh/html from where the text has now been unpinned, but a screenshot of this announcement is open to the Internet.

From the attack there was no severe harm done, apart from a server's file which was destroyed, but it was a scary experience according to the Organization's Scientists, as from what they reported, if the team gained access to a second computer attached to the network they could obtain control of some of the LHC's components and maybe cause a severe damage.

Though, according to James Gilles, the attack was quickly noticed and the announcement soon went down.

It is also important to say, that the team made no political statement, but they just fired against other hacker teams and the Greek teenagers. They also report in their text that they corrected a network bug to avoid CERN's Network become a dork of every "wannabe hacker" and the fact that they did not intent to harm the Organization or it's network.
